Some interesting facts about our Fish Finders

Did you know that fishing has been a popular pastime for thousands of years?  And the same thing challenges all of us - finding fish and getting them to bite.  Although a fish finder's sonar can’t make the fish bite, it can help find the fish so you can work on catching them!  Did you know that the word "sonar" is an abbreviation for "SOund, NAvigation and Ranging"?   Sonar was developed as a means of tracking enemy submarines during World War II.  Sonar consists of a transmitter, transducer, receiver and display. In the simplest terms, an electrical impulse from a transmitter is converted into a sound wave by the transducer and sent into the water. When this wave strikes an object, it rebounds. This echo strikes the transducer, which converts it back into an electric signal, which is amplified by the receiver and sent to the display.  Using this same sonar technology, but with today's highly advanced electronics, Fish Finder City is happy to offer you every major brand of fish finder, chart plotter, sounder and GPS/Fish Finder Combos.

Fish Finder Transducers

The transducer could be thought of as the fish finder's "antenna."  It converts electric energy from the transmitter to high frequency sound and the sound wave from the transducer travels through the water and bounces back from any object in the water. When the returning echo strikes the transducer, it converts the sound back into electrical energy which is sent to the sonar unit's receiver.  If you still don't get good fish arches on the screen, it could be that the transducer's mounting is incorrect. If the transducer is mounted on the transom, adjust it until its face is pointing straight down when the boat is in the water.  If it's angled, the arch won't appear on the screen properly.

GPS Fish Finder Combos

If you want the best of both worlds, you might want to consider a fishfinder combo unit.  It's basically a fish finder with a built-in GPS for plotting your course, finding your way back to port, or your favorite fishing spot.  The GPS can work in combination with detailed marine cartography maps, thus working as a chart plotter - a device that overlays GPS data on to marine navigational charts.

Chart Plotters

Chart plotters overlay GPS data on to marine navigational charts.  These devices use a GPS (Global Positioning System) and marine charts for navigation and hazard avoidance.  The maps are displayed on a screen with varying amounts of detail depending on the unit and the source of map cartography being used.  Depths and contours are usually displayed, as well as marine markers, ports, docks, etc.
